What are the benefits of migrating to the Cloud?

There are many benefits for businesses migrating their IT systems to the Cloud, but commonly the most obvious ones are cost, scalability, flexibility and business continuity.

The costs of moving to the cloud can vary significantly depending on business requirements, whether you use a local data centre or a global one, like Microsoft Azure. However, in the right environment migrating to the cloud can have a significant impact on IT costs.

Typically, businesses replace severs and IT equipment at 5 year intervals and during that time have the remedial costs of space, electricity and cooling to take into consideration. A cloud solution removes the need to replace equipment (and the installation costs associated to it) as it can be upgraded as required, only impacting your monthly, or annual, costs. Furthermore, the remedial costs are removed as they are covered by the fee charged for hosting.

This leads directly onto scalability because new severs, more processing power or more storage space, can simply be added to your system when you need it. This allows the solution to grow with your business and avoid a common situation of having a sever that works brilliantly in year one, but fails to keep up with demands over a 5 year period and eventually has to be replaced.

Cloud IT is great for staff too as (providing you give them access) they can work from anywhere. Because they connect remotely to your IT network they can work from the office as normal, but can access exactly the same environment when working from home, or on the road.

Finally, in terms of business continuity, Cloud IT makes a huge difference.

If, for any reason, you are unable to work from your office (power cut, internet failure, flood, fire etc.) then your servers (and therefore you applications and data) are not affected as they are located in a data centre.

This allows you staff to go home, or to another office, connect to the internet and carry on as normal.
